Start at Station Rd, Henley-on-Thames RG9 1NP. Very close to the train station This is part 1 of 23 sections of the Chilterns Cycleway. See page 10 of the enclosed PDF This route has been hand drawn and follows the Chiltern Cycleway EXACTLY. The trace on open street map takes the street to the right (in 2024) Note the starting road is one way. 2: Sonning Common to Ipsden (E)

Start at 8 Kidmore Ln, Sonning Common, Reading RG4 9SH Section 2 of 23 of the Chiltern Cycleway See page 12 of the enclosed PDF This stretch will take you through classic Chilterns scenery dominated by beech woodlands and narrow sunken lanes with high-sided banks. As one nears Ipsden views over the Oxfordshire vale are breath taking. Route information: Once you have left Sonning Common behind the route is on very quiet lanes. 3: Ipsden to Cookley Green (E)

Start at Ipsden Village Hall, Ipsden, Wallingford OX10 6AH Section 3 of 23 of the Chilterns Cycleway This section passes through much more open countryside with wonderful views over the Thames floodplain. The picturesque village of Ewelme is a real gem. Route Information: One road crossing with fast traffic at the A4130. Apart from that, the route follows quiet rural lanes. The final stage to Cookley Green involves a long steady climb up and over the Downs past Swyncombe House. more ...

4: Cookley Green to Stokenchurch (E)

Start at Cookley Green, Henley-on-Thames RG9 6EL This section follows the top of the Chilterns escarpment through beech woodlands and past some spectacular stretches of chalk downland with far-reaching views. Route information: Care is needed on road out of Cookley Green. After half a mile the route turns right then sharp left to Christmas Common. The A40 through Stokenchurch is not too busy outside rush hours and is wide with clear views. more ...

5: Stokenchurch to Loosley Row (E)

Start at Oxford Rd, Stokenchurch, High Wycombe HP14 3TA This is section 5 of 23 of the Chiltern Cycleway. See page 18 of the enclosed PDF guide This section through the tucked-away Radnage Valley is challenging but you will be rewarded with fantastic scenery and picturesque villages. Route information: On leaving Stokenchurch the route becomes much more demanding with a steep climb up to Bledlow Ridge. Roads are quiet and twisty with great views. 6: Loosley Row to Wendover (E)

Start at Woodway, Princes Risborough HP27 0NW Section 6 of 23 of the Chilterns Cycleway. See page 20 of the enclosed PDF There is extensive woodland on this part of the ride until you drop down into Wendover and the Misbourne valley. Route information: Generally quiet roads but steep hills through open countryside and managed woodland. The roads near Chequers can be busy with fast-moving traffic but visibility is good. 7: Wendover to Aldbury (E)

Start at Hale Rd, Wendover, Aylesbury HP22 6NF Section 7 of 23 parts of the Chiltern Cycleway This section will take you out of the busy, small market town of Wendover, through wooded rolling countryside to Aldbury at the foot of the Chilterns escarpment. Start at Aldbury, Tring HP23 5RT This is Section 8 of the Chilterns Cycleway, page 24 of the PDF guide This section leads up through the extensive woodland of the Ashridge Estate and out over the chalk uplands of Ivinghoe Beacon. Route information: The route is on roads and lanes, except for the Ashridge Estate's 'Duncombe Terrace Route' (about 2 1/2 miles) between the Bridgewater Monument and a car park near Ivinghoe Hills. Start at Breachwood Green, Hitchin SG4 8PA This is section 11 of the Chilterns Cycleway. See page 29 of the enclosed PDF This section passes through picturesque villages and climbs through valley and farmland. Route information: The route is on country lanes and passes to the east of Luton through Darley Hall, Tea Green, Cockernhoe and by Mangrove Green. Chalk Hill is steep.

12: Lilley to Apsley End (E)

Start at Hexton Rd, Lilley, Luton LU2 8NA This is section 12 of the Chilterns Cycleway, see page 30 of the enclosed PDF From Lilley the route descends to the open landscape of the Bedfordshire Levels, rising again to go up and over the Sundon Hills. Route information: This route is on undulating roads and lanes with a significant hill near Sundon Hills Country Park. The roads on this stretch can be busy, especially through Barton-le-Clay. 13: Apsley End to Great Offley (E)

Start at Apsley End, Hitchin SG5 3HB This is section 13 of the Chiltern Cycleway This section will take you from the flat Bedfordshire clay lands to the Pegsdon Downs chalk hills. From Pirton the route goes southwards on unsurfaced tracks. Route information: From Pirton there is a 2.5 mile stretch of uphill bridleway which is not surfaced and rutted in places (it is not suitable for road bikes with slick tyres).

14: Great Offley to Whitwell (E)

Start at Kings Walden Rd, Hitchin SG5 3DX This is section 14 of the Chiltern Cycleway. See page 33 of the enclosed PDF This section is on country lanes which pass through farmland then down from King's Walden to the river at Whitwell. Route information: This route is undulating. There is a long hill between King's Walden and Whitwell.

15: Whitwell to Harpenden (E)

Start at Whitwell, Hitchin SG4 8HS This is section 15 of the Chiltern Cycleway. See page 34 of the enclosed PDF Whitwell to Harpenden 34 This section includes both attractive and undulating farmland and woods and also urban views from the former railway line as it skirts Harpenden. Route information: This section is on quite hilly lanes and two reasonably flat greenways: the Nickey Line and the Lea Valley Walk. The surfaces of the paths are variable but generally good. 16: Harpenden to Great Gaddesden (E)

Start at Harpenden AL5 2HE This is Section 16 of the Chiltern Cycleway. See page 36 of the enclosed PDF With the exception of a long hill near the Gaddesden Place Estate, riders can enjoy a predominantly level route through farm land and on the Nickey Line. Route information: This section uses the Nickey Line between Harpenden and Church End and lanes between Church End and Great Gaddesden. The only significant and long hill is near Great Gaddesden

17: Great Gaddesden to Berkhamsted (E)

Start at Piper's Hill, Great Gaddesden, Hemel Hempstead HP1 3BY Section 17 of the . See page 38 of the enclosed PDF This section passes through hill and valley on country lanes, descending into Berkhamsted to join the towpath on the Grand Union Canal. Route information: This route is on lanes, roads and the well- paved canal towpath between Berkhamsted and Dudswell. 18: Berkhamsted to Botley (Ley Hill) (E)

Start at 18 Berkhamsted HP4 3NQ This is section 18 of the Chiltern Cycleway. See page 40 of the enclosed PDF This stretch takes you from theoutskirts of Berkhamsted through gently undulating country lanes and lovely villages, to Ley Hill. Route information: One incline up to the ridge overlooking the Grand Union Canal. The roads are generally quiet but take care when crossing busy roads.

19: Botley (Ley Hill) to Amersham (E)

Start at Ley Hill, Chesham HP5 1UY This is section of the 19 of the Chiltern Cycleway. See page 41 of the enclosed PDF Route information: Some steep descents out of Ley Hill on quiet roads to Latimer and across the River Chess. From here the route follows unsurfaced woodland tracks to Amersham (Cycleway follows Chiltern Heritage Trail which is signed). 20: Amersham to Great Kingshill (E)

Start at Glebe Way, Amersham HP6 5ND This is Section 20 of the cycleway. See page 42 of the enclosed PDF From Amersham you pass the attractive village of Little Missenden and the River Misbourne. After climbing out of the valley the route passes through Holmer Green and Great Kingshill. Route information: There is one steep descent and out of Hyde Heath into Little Missenden. A long steady climb takes you out of the village.

21: Great Kingshill to West Wycombe (E)

Start at The Common, Great Kingshill HP15 6EN This is section 21 of the Chiltern Cycleway. See page 44 of the enclosed PDF This section passes through several small villages including the village of Speen before descending into the West Wycombe valley through which the River Wye flows. Start at High St, West Wycombe, High Wycombe HP14 3AE This is section 22 of the Chiltern Cycleway.
